Roger Federer – David Goffin Match Prediction | 01-09-2019 11:00

However, he was pushed hard by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round, scraping into the last eight a 7-6 4-6 7-5 winner and he was again taken the distance there by Roberto Bautista Agut. But he just edged the Spaniard 6-3 4-6 6-4 before dismissing the Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 6-3, losing just five points behind his serve. Federer, the top seed in Halle, began his campaign with a 7-6 6-3 win over John Millman of Australia, who had stunned him last season in the US Open quarterfinals.

Goffin will be appearing in only his 2nd grass-court final in this match, but will he be able to do enough to secure his first career ATP grass-court title? The four-time ATP champion then produced a stunning fightback to beat the second seed Alexander Zverev in three-sets, before producing another fantastic performance to beat the inform Italian Matteo Berrettini in straight-sets. The twenty-eight-year-old had come perilously close to dropping out of the top-32 in the rankings, but his good run here has earned him some much needed ranking points. Belgian ace David Goffin has rediscovered some of his very best tennis this week, following a tough twelve months or so for the former ATP Finals finalist. Goffin began the week with an extremely comfortable straight-sets win against Guido Pella, before fighting back from a set down to beat Radu Albot.

David timed his form in this tournament to perfection and should be a very tough opponent for Roger in the finals. For example when he withdrew from the QF match with Stefanos Tsitsipas in Rome, after a grueling battle vs Coric in the round prior. Key for him in this match will be to play defense as well as he did vs Berrettini. Fatigue might be an issue for the legendary Swiss, after a couple of really tough matches this week and many hours spent on the court. He had 8 attempts at the upset so far in his career and managed to accomplish it only once. It happened in the semifinals of the ATP finals two years ago, when he eliminated Federer in three sets. He has to prolong the rallies and get Roger into a dog fight. We could see that being a factor for him this season already.

Goffin is a respectable player when hes playing with confidence and hitting his spots, and this is the best weve seen from him in a while. Theres just no betting against Federer on this surface, especially given his history against Goffin. With that said, Federer is Federer, and hes owned this tournament over the last decade, and he seems to be getting stronger as this event goes along.

The Swiss was pushed to a deciding set a year later in Basel, but still ultimately came through 6-3 3-6 6-1. He then dismantled Goffin in the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 2016, losing just seven games in a convincing win. Their most recent meeting in Basel last month saw Federer record his most convincing victory yet as he destroyed a listless Goffin in the semis 6-1 6-2. Federer won again in Halle on the grass, triumphing 6-1 7-6 after a thrilling tiebreak he won 12-10.

There was pretty much nothing that Frenchman could do in this match to hurt Federer. Federer's road to the finals was definitely tougher than expected, but he eventually got there. In the beginning, he faced someone that strangely always gives him a lot of problems. Roberto Bautista Agut in quarters was another tough test which needed a third set to decide the winner. This time as well, John Millman was challenging Federer until the tie-break of the first set, in which he finally broke Aussie's resistance. Despite being a very solid returner with a lot of experience from doubles, he won merely 12% of all returning points and had 0 break opportunities in the match. After that, he spent 2 hours and 18 minutes on court against Tsonga, who should never be underestimated on the grass and he proved that once again. After getting through one of the tougher first 3 rounds a #1 seed can get at a 500 series tournament, I believe he really needed this easy win over Herbert in the semifinals that will give his 37-year old body some more time to rest before tomorrow's finals. Starting from the first round, he had to play on a very high level to beat his opponents.

Whilst Federer can be almost invulnerable from the line, as he showed against Herbert, Goffin struggles to dominate behind his own deal. But he has won nine titles in Halle for a reason and should have enough in the vital moments to see off Goffins challenge. Federer certainly shouldnt expect to have things all his own way then. That said, he is a far better returner than Herbert and indeed possesses more quality in that department than any opponent Federer has yet faced at the Halle Open. If there is one major weakness in the man from Lieges game, however, it is his second serve.

Federer comes into this match with a healthy 7-1 lead in their head-to-head. Goffin had a measure of revenge for those defeats in 2017 at the World Tour Finals, where he beat Federer 2-6 6-3 6-4 in the semis. In 2012 in the fourth round at Roland Garros, Goffin produced a battling display in a four-set loss to Federer having won the first. But Goffin has given him trouble in the past. It was Federer who won their last match, however, when Goffin withdrew trailing 6-7 1-1 in Cincinnati last season. But that was the first of six straight wins for Federer, including a 7-6 6-1 win in the Halle Open quarterfinals in 2016.

Sock, who was making his debut at the O2, began in the worst possiblefashion, dropping serve immediately. There was to be no second reprieve for Sock as he failed to win another point. Federer began his round robin campaign against American Jack Sock. Unable to lay a glove on Federer during the Swiss service games the first set escaped him. In the ensuing tiebreak he went down an early mini-break but played well to recover it, only to double fault at 4-4. He worked hard in the second set to hold on to his own serve, repeatedly denying Federer on break point, but could make no opportunities of his own.

History

If he succeeds to keep the level of tennis from that match, he'll be no joke in the finals. Goffin moving the way he moved in previous days and defending on a high level gives him a lot of chance to push this match the distance. I think those odds are not respecting enough what Goffin accomplished this week and especially how he played against Berrettini. And as I already wrote, years, stamina and recovery time are a factor for Roger. He is not the youngest guy on the tour anymore and legs are not as fresh in the later stages of the tournament. Federer opened as a massive 5 to 1 favorite.

However, the Belgian had no answer for Dimitrovs power and was brushed aside 0-6 2-6. Ultimately, however, his body was just not up to the task as he lost a thriller 7-6 6-7 6-4. Nadal came into the match carrying a knee injury but worked hard throughout to deny Goffin an easy victory. Goffin opened in London against Spains world #1 Rafael Nadal. Nadal withdrew from the competition shortly afterwards to be replaced by Pablo Carreno Busta. Goffin moved on to face Dimitrov for a spot in the semifinals.

In what should be an interesting final on Sunday, who will do enough to lift the 2019 Halle Open title? Roger Federer vs David Goffin Betting Tips and Predictions, as Roger Federer looks to win his record-extending 10th Halle Open title. The Swiss ace is into yet another final here in Halle, and hell be looking to make amends for his defeat in last years final. David Goffin, meanwhile, is into his first final here in Halle, while hes also into a first ATP final in well over 18 months. Roger Federer will come into this final as the clear favourite to win this title, but it might not be as straight-forward as some suggest, with a clearly resurgent David Goffin standing in his way.
