Our Prediction:

Virginia will win

Virginia – Pittsburgh Match Prediction | 26-08-2019 19:30

Last week, they shut down A.J. For the second week in a row, Virginias defense is facing a RB who blew up out of nowhere the previous week. This week, the Hoos must content with Darrin Hall, who rushed for 256 yards and three TDs against Duke. He was averaging just 3.5 yards per carry before rushing for over 10 yards a pop last week. Dillon, but perhaps focused too much on Dillon and gave up big plays to basically everybody else. Halls previous high was 52 yards against Youngstown State.

The Cavs are led by their run game, which averages 186 yards per game. Olamide Zaccheaus is the leading receiver with 56 catches for 690 yards and six touchdowns. Offensively, UVA is putting up 28.3 points and 390.8 yards per contest. The Cavaliers are tremendous on defense, holding opponents to just 18.8 points and 327.4 yards per game. Jordan Ellis is leading the way with 683 yards rushing and seven touchdowns while Bryce Perkins has run for 575 yards and six scores. Perkins also has thrown for 1,623 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Hes not the biggest or fastest LB, but he has great instincts. Those LBs who lead the team in tackles are Idowu, who weve already mentioned, and MLB Saleem Brightwell. He had five catches in 2015. The third LB, Elijah Zeise, is also undersized, and began his career as a WR. Idowu was a walkon who stepped in last year due to injuries and impressed. Brightwell is really more of an OLB than a MLB, and is also undersized. He missed the entire regular season last year with an injury. But hes played well this year, especially in underneath pass coverage.

He isnt really a pass rusher, but hes tough to run against. Hes 64 280 and hes very talented. That is how you get a CB as the team lead in sacks. Of course, blitzing can lead to big plays for the offense, as Wahoo fans well know. That means the pass rush has to come off the blitz. Redshirt freshman DT Keyshawn Camp leads the DL with 17 tackles and also has four passes broken up. The DL has combined for just three sacks.

The Hoos have a big advantage on this side of the ball. This week, Pitts defensive strengths and weaknesses match Virginias offensive strengths and weaknesses. There is simply no reason for the Cavs to not be successful on offense. The matchup last week wasnt a good one, and the early big plays from the Eagles meant that the game plan changed.

His versatility is a plus, and will get him into the NFL where hell probably play at center. LG Alex Officer was the starting center all of last year, after playing RG the previous year, and center as a freshman. They average nearly 320 pounds. Obviously, that means the left side of the line is the strength and should be the focus of the defensive game plan. Thats where well see Andrew Brown most of the time. LT Brian ONeill is also an NFL prospect. Pitts has one of the biggest OLs in the nation.

They have almost no pass rush, with just 11 sacks in eight games. Pitt calls their LBs Star, Mike, and Money. They arent a whole lot better in TFLs, as Idowu leads the team with 8.5, but nobody else is over four. You can simply read that as Strong, Middle and Weak. No player has more than two with LB Oluwaseum Idowu and CB Avonte Maddox tied for the team lead.

A trio of undersized, quick LBs is why this team is better at stopping the run. When your blitzing LB is giving up nearly 100 pounds to the OL blocking him, hes not going to win that battle very often. Its also part of why they have no pass rush. That means the OL will have to communicate well. It also means the RBs will be involved in blitz pickup.

Pitt is averaging just 27.8 points and 374.8 yards per game on offense this season, but the Panthers have put up over 30 points in three of four wins and over 40 in two of those wins. Darrin Hall has added 429 rushing yards. Kenny Pickett has thrown for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns. Pitt has a strong run game, led by Qadree Ollison, who has run for 795 yards and seven touchdowns. Their run defense is giving up 185 yards per contest. Defensively, Pittsburgh is allowing 32.6 points and 436 yards per contest.

That is not an issue this week, because Pitt is better at rush defense than pass defense. BCs defensive weakness was on the ground, something Virginia wasnt really able to exploit because of the early deficit. BCs pass defense is actually pretty good, and it showed last week. Yes, teams are averaging 4.7 yards per carry (37th worst), but they are also averaging almost 9 yards per pass attempt (9th worst).
